eepulse Leadership Energy & Confidence Data

‘Energy’ is a measure of how energized people feel at work. The scale is 1 to 10 (1 being not at all energized and 10 very energized approaching burnout). Dr. Welbourne’s research over the last 18 years shows that energy in an organization predicts organizational performance (including stock price, team results, sales, etc).

As the trend scale shows, energy has dropped somewhat since last Fall. (The purple line shows the energy including the new approx. 500 people from the Conference Board, a new strategic partner in the research study.) This means that leaders in the sample are slightly less energized at work.

The other key metric studied was leadership confidence. This measures how confident are the leaders in their leadership. This is a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 as not all confident and 5 being very confident. Isolating the data to just include the general leadership sample and looking at the trend data, below you will see the results for the leadership confidence scale:

The steady decline in confidence, combined with the decline in energy, seems consistent with what we might expect, but not necessarily what we need to make it successfully through the current "tough times" we seem to be experiencing in the economy.

Demographics of Participants in this Study:

  • A total of 899 leaders answered the survey.
  • 78% were from the United States; 2% each from the following countries: Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, India, and Belgium, and then the People's Republic of China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Mexico each respectively had 1% of the population. Less than 1% was from a number of other countries. The net is that we have a global sample, but the majority of the participants are from the United States.
  • In terms of job level, 13% were CEOs/ Presidents; 7% from other C-core jobs (CIO, CFO, etc.), 21% were VPs, 26% Directors, and the remainder were in other management positions.
  • A total of 29% of the respondents were from firms with more than 50,000 employees, and 19% had less than 100 employees (these are the extreme scores; all data will be reported in follow-up reports).
